An exhibition at the Espacio Gallery is seeking to help us understand how different perceptions and experiences lead to a reality we accept as a universal truth.

In “This is Reality” eight artists using a variety of media explore and interpret the world and present the truth as it appears to them.

Artist Ann Simberg started her exploration of the theme by examining the landscape around her.

For Ann, who moved to London 30 years ago, this took her back to her native Finland.

“The original country doesn’t leave you,” she said. “I think it’s true for everyone; I am not a special case.

“I put the figurative into the landscape to see how it works.

“It’s an intuitive feeling; I don’t want to overdo things. Sometimes I can destroy a painting by overdoing it.”

In her work Ann uses colour and juxtaposition to make sense of her identity and place in the world.

And the particular challenge of this exhibition was looking to make her reality one that could be shared and understood by others.

“It’s a selfish act painting somehow, but to find what works when you show it to others is particularly challenging.

“To know it’s all right to show this or not, that was always ongoing and wasparticularly difficult for this show.

“I do know when a painting is finished, I don’t know exactly where it’s going to lead to or end up.”

This is Reality will be held at the Espacio Gallery between April 13 and April 17. Entrance is free. Click here to visit the gallery website.
