Providing easy access to support and advice as well as making it easier for people to report abuse is the reason behind the launch of the Newham Adult Abuse Help Line.

The 24-hour dedicated helpline launched by the council and Newham Safeguarding Adults Partnership will help victims, carers and witnesses report physical, emotional and institutional abuse or neglect.

Most adults are well cared for, however some may find themselves at risk of abuse. It could be because of their mental capacity, age or disability and/or how they are perceived by the people around them.

The helpline can be used for a variety of things, from straight forward information and advice about the abuse and the safety of the more vulnerable adults in the borough; to the disclosure of a specific concern about your own or somebody else’s safety.

All allegations of abuse are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated however confidentiality is respected.

Cllr Joy Laguda, executive member of older persons and Adults said: “It is unacceptable that some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our communities have to contend with abusive behaviour from people around them.

“Introducing one number for vulnerable people, their family, friends and professionals to call is important because it helps to remove barriers to reporting abuse.

This is just one the measures we are introducing to support older people to live their lives free from fear, violence and abuse”.

If you or someone you know is being abused, or if you suspect abuse, telephone the Newham Adult Abuse Help Line on 020 3373 0440.
