Measures outlined in the Government’s National Infrastructure Plan include provisions for University College London (UCL) and University of the Arts London (UAL) to build bases in the park.

The scheme, which also features new locations for the Victoria and Albert Museum and Sadler’s Wells, is expected to create 3,000 jobs and boost the area’s economy by £2.8bln.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: “It is absolutely fantastic that the government has confirmed funding for this ambitious project to the tune of £141m, enabling us to progress with detailed plans for its delivery.

“This is an important milestone in our plans to realise a legacy from London’s 2012 Games that reaps economic and social dividends to last for generations to come.”

UCL will create a new 125,000sq m hub to the south of the ArcelorMittal Orbit – the university’s largest single expansion in it’s 200-year history – housing the institution’s first design school, a museum of the future and a centre for experimental engineering.

‘UCL East’ will also boast a technology centre – UCL Innovation – and accommodation for undergraduates, postgraduate research students plus early-career academic staff.

Meanwhile UAL will establish a 32,000sq m campus on Stratford Waterfront, opposite the Aquatics Centre, with a fashion research and education hub, bringing together London College of Fashion’s 6,500 students and staff for the first time.

The development is set to deliver 1.5 million additional visitors to Stratford and the surrounding area and Mayor of Newham Sir Robin Wales welcomed the news.

“This new cultural hub further cements Newham’s investment in the former Olympic Stadium as a lasting legacy for our residents, London and the nation,” he said.

“As well as offering a huge number of jobs for local people, it will offer a significant boost to East London’s economy for years to come.”

The Waterfront site will also house permanent galleries in the V and A’s new 20,000sq m site including include the UK’s first dedicated museum space to document the full breadth of digital design.

Sadler’s Wells aims to create a 7,000sq m venue with a 600-seat dance theatre, providing flexible space for research and development, alongside facilities for a choreographic school and a hip hop academy.
