The Atherton leisure centre, Romford Road, Forest Gate, includes a gym, exercise studios, two swimming pools, a crèche and a cafe replacing the old leisure centre facilites.

Hundreds of people have already signed up for memberships, according owners Newham Council, with the doors set to officially open to the public at 8am on Saturday, April 2.

Cllr Ian Corbett, mayoral advisor for environment and leisure, said: “The multi-million investment in this new centre shows our commitment to providing our residents with every possible opportunity to lead fit and active lives.

“The old centre needed a major face lift to encourage people to use the centre and enjoy the benefits of regular exercise.

“This state of the art centre is a fantastic addition to the wide range of sport and leisure opportunities we provide across the borough for people of all ages and abilities.”

The centre is one of four leisure centres – including Balaam, Newham and East Ham and a fitness centre in Manor Park – that are all run by activeNewham on behalf of the council.
