East Ham MP Stephen Timms has praised Jack Petchey hey man who is giving part of his fortune to youth for “a lifetime defined by generosity” that has “given thousands of young people a better chance in life”.
His tribute came after he attended a ceremony in which Mr Petchey received his CBE not at Buckingham Palace but in south-west London before the young people he has helped.
Jack, who grew up in Manor Park, was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by The Queen in the New Year for distinguished achievement for service to the community.
His Foundation has made grants of over �70 million to 2,000 youth initiatives since 1999. He also sponsors the Petchey Academy; a Hackney school specialising in health, care and medical science.
Mr Petchey was invited to attend Buckingham Palace to receive his award chose to celebrate with “his people” at Kensington Town Hall where he received the insignia from the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir David Brewer.
Speaking afterwards, the MP said: “Jack, having achieved a great deal of personal success, has devoted himself to giving back to the community he grew up in.” He described the philanthropist, who made his fortune in business and housing deals, as an inspiration to young people – “not least for his hard work, dedication and pride in his community”

The Foundation, said Jack, seeks to raise aspirations, reward achievement and make a difference to young people whatever their circumstances.
