The mayor has gone Down Under to discuss his government’s achievements in the borough.

Sir Robin Wales was hosted by the Western Australian Local Government in Perth and the Committee for Sydney earlier in the month, where he spoke about the Olympic legacy and how to secure jobs.

He also paid a visit to Hong Kong to meet Chinese businesspeople who are considering investing in Newham.

Speaking in Sydney, the mayor discussed London City Airport, housing, employment and London’s move eastwards.

The Commitee for Sydney quotes Sir Robin explaining that, in the borough’s development, “it’s not just the shiny buildings that are important, it’s about people”.

A spokeswoman for Newham Council said: “The visit was also an opportunity to learn best practice from the Australian government.”

She added that the mayor’s expenses were paid in full by his hosts.
