Maryland residents anger over ‘dirty and messy’ Tesco store

Angry residents in Maryland have slammed Tesco, claiming their local store is dirty and messy and the worst in the company.
Members of the Maryland E15 group say the supermarket giant have done nothing to improve the branch despite them complaining 50 times via email, Facebook and Twitter.
They claim the stores’ exterior wall is dirty and the store is ‘a mess’ inside.
Nick Monopoli has led the campaign to clean up the store and has the full support of Cllr Seyi Akiwowo, who represents Forest Gate North.
He said: “It’s getting frustrating and it’s probably one of the worst Tesco’s I ever been to.”
He said he has had numerous responses from Tesco’s saying they will look into it and is starting to feel like it’s a wasted effort to keep enquiring.
“I know there are worse things going on around the world, than to have a wall painted, but Maryland is only small and we all care about the area.
“Everyone in Maryland is fed up because it’s our only local supermarket, so that’s why it’s important to us.”
Cllr Akiwowo has spoken to Lyn Brown, MP for West Ham, about writing a letter to Tesco’s head office to voice residents’ concerns.
She told the Recorder: “I can share Nick’s frustration, when people say they’re going to do something, they should do it.
“Having a clean space and a clean environment is really important to make people feel pride in their area.
“If they could just let us know what there challenges are, as we know these things don’t happen in a day.”
A Tesco’s spokesman said: “We lease the property at our Leytonstone Road Express store and any repairs to the building must be carried out by the landlord.
“We share the concerns of local residents about the condition of the wall and we are keen to see the work take place to repaint it. We are currently working with our landlord to ensure this is carried out as soon as possible.”
