Recent weeks saw two young people killed on our streets. I’ve no idea what motivated these, but I do know how much pain is caused to families, friends and our communities each and every time such a dreadful event happens.

Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and the wider family rarely come to terms with such a brutal loss. Communities are scarred and traumatised. We must find better ways of working with young people to halt these tragedies.

A month ago, I would have phoned Kevin Jenkins to talk things through and work out what we could immediately do.

We’d have found sources of funding and striven to make the ideas a reality. On April 7, Kevin was taken from us. I have lost a friend and co-conspirator. I already miss him beyond words.

Kevin served our communities selflessly for 44 years, motivated by his love for Newham. He always put the interests of Newham’s children at the centre of everything he did.

Kevin established Ambition Aspire Achieve (AAA). AAA runs Arc in the Park, providing opportunities and safe play for all children, but especially those with disabilities or with special educational needs.

AAA also hosts play clubs and workshops, helping children build resilience against those who would mislead, exploit and threaten them.

Kevin founded the Christmas Toy Appeal. Last year was its 43rd and most successful ever. We reached almost 3,000 children despite Covid, ensuring struggling families had gifts and treats for their children.

Kevin always focused on local issues. I admired how quickly he identified new threats to Newham’s young people and crafted inventive and successful responses. Kevin was among the first to spot how vulnerable all young people – not just teenagers – are to gang grooming and county lines.

Kevin was a visionary, he was simply inspirational, a gentle, committed giant among men.

I have lost a true friend and Newham has lost one of its finest.
