It's official: the London Stadium is the best sports ground to have opened in the past year.
That’s according to a panel of five architects, who selected West Ham’s new home as the winner of the Stadium of the Year competition, beating competition from grounds such as the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and Istanbul’s Vodafone Arena.
Venues were judged according to three criteria - visual impact, relation with surroundings and innovation.
Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: “It is fantastic for London Stadium to be recognised in this way, and credit to the huge amount of hard work that has gone into making West Ham United’s home one of the most iconic and recognisable venues in the world.
“With the third highest capacity in English football, we have a stadium that truly reflects the ambition and potential of this great football club, and I firmly believe that our supporters can look forward to a very exciting future here.”
Previous winners of the jury vote, run by design magazine Staduim DB, include Matmut Atlantique in Bordeaux, France, and the Allianz Parque in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
A separate public vote put the Vodafone Arena in first place and the London Stadium 11th.
