The head of London City Airport has praised the government for approving Heathrow expansion plans.

CEO Declan Collier said the announcement to build a third runway at the west London site was “good news for Britain” in the “current political climate”.

He also linked the move to his own airport’s expansion, which was agreed in July.

“Approving development at London City Airport earlier this year showed the government’s readiness to act in the best interests of the British economy as it will generate more economic activity and create more jobs at the airport,” he said.

He added: “A new runway [at Heathrow] will create much needed capacity, helping secure the UK’s position as a global hub.”

The response to the approval has been mixed, with Mayor of London Sadiq Khan saying it was the “wrong decision” while the Confederation of British Industry said it was an “enormous relief”.

The decision will not be made by Parliament until winter next year, but Mr Collier said it was important to look ahead.

“The aviation industry must now work with government to ensure we continue to look to the future and can deliver in the short, medium and long term to keep Britain open for business,” he said.
