The first batch of completed rooms for athletes competing in the Games have been revealed for the first time.

The Athletes’ Village was handed over to Games organisers Locog at the start of the year to enable furnishings to be installed and the rooms to be fitted out.

When fully completed in June, the entire village, containing 2,818 apartments, will be able to house up to 16,000 athletes and team officials during the Olympics.

A further 6,200 athletes and officials as well as 1,000 referees and umpires will stay in the blocks during the Paralympics.

Olympic gold medallist and former triple jumper Jonathan Edwards, chairman of Locog’s athletes’ committee, oversaw the furnishing process.

He said: “I am confident we have helped create the perfect base for the Olympians and Paralympians coming to London this summer.”

Landscaping work is still on-going to create green open spaces and recreational areas for athletes.

After the Games, the apartments will be re-fitted and handed over for public use. A total of 1,739 of the homes in what will be called the East Village will become ‘affordable’ housing.

Locog chairman Seb Coe added: “The first Games-time apartments offer an early glimpse of the gold-medal standard village we are delivering to help athletes prepare for one of the biggest sporting moments of their lives.”
