Mysterious road markings appearing all over Newham are in fact road preparations for the Olympic Games.

Transport for London (TfL) will start working on white and Olympic Rings lines marking out 30 miles of Games lanes along the Olympic Road Network (ORN) overnight on Sunday July 1.

This means works will not require road closures but small areas will be cordoned off with traffic directed around them.

Covering a total of 109 miles in London, around 150 Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be placed to communicate to drivers they may continue to use the road as normal until operation of the ORN begins on July 25.

A penalty charge of 130 will be issued to drivers who break regulations, such as driving in Games lanes or stopping on the route, and illegally parked vehicles will be impounded with a release fee of 200.

Adjustments are also being made to 1,300 sets of traffic lights while a complete ban on planned road works on A and B roads has already been imposed.

Other preparatory works include barriers to simplify junctions to be put in place from July 20 to July 23.

A new instructive two-minute film will also be released by TfL on Sunday at www.GetAheadoftheGames.com.
