The Liberal Democrats have announced their candidates for the upcoming local elections, saying they want to “break this one party state situation” in Newham.

Gareth Evans will be the party’s mayoral candidate and is also standing in Stratford and New Town to become a councillor.

A spokesman said: “The Liberal Democrats want to bring a fresh start and break this one party state situation that has led to a decline in residents’ services as well as the wasting of taxpayer’s money over recent years including the £52.5 million lost on Newham’s failed Olympic Stadium scheme.”

They are concerned about the rise in violent crime in east London and support a Glasweigan-style “public health approach” to the issue.

“Newham Liberal Democrats will campaign for more frequent and better recycling services - instead of the current fortnightly collection - better street cleaning provision and more robust action on flytipping.”

They will also “champion the rights of EU citizens”.

Lib Dem candidates will be standing in Canning Town South, East Ham North, Forest Gate North, Forest Gate South, Manor Park, Plaistow North, Plaistow South, Royal Docks, Stratford and New Town and West Ham.
