With just two months to go until a new Mayor of London is elected, seven of the candidates vying to succeed Boris Johnson took to their computers for an online hustings.

Labour’s Sadiq Khan and Conservtive candidate Zac Goldsmith were joined by Liberal Democrat Caroline Pidgeon, Sian Berry of the Green Party, Ukip’s Peter Whittle, Respect’s George Galloway and Sophie Walker of the Women’s Equality Party.

Over the past few weeks, the Recorder has been collecting your questions, and yesterday evening we put them to the candidates.

The hour-long debate covered a wide range of issues affecting Londoners, from council housing and the capital’s night-time economy to the minimum wage and public transport.

A number of more localised topics, such as London City Airport’s expansion, were also asked by readers.

The candidates rounded off the debate by pitching why they would be the best person to be elected mayor on May 5.

Mr Khan, currently the MP for Tooting, pledged to be “a mayor for all Londoners”, saying that the cost of living and commuting could mean a generation “missing out on the opportunities that London gave me.”

Mr Goldsmith, MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston, said: “This mayoral election comes at a critical point.

“My record shows that when I say I will deliver, I do.”

Following the hustings, Camden councillor Ms Berry thanked everyone for taking part, adding: “Lots of important issues covered and they weren’t very predictable either.”

Peckham-born Mr Whittle added: “It was great to hear what Londoners had to say.”

Recorder editor Michael Adkins said: “Thanks to all the candidates for taking part and to everyone who sent in a question.

“I hope it helps readers to make up their mind who to vote for in May.”
