Over 500 residents from the five east London boroughs gathered in Stratford last week to outline a local Legacy they could believe in.

The East London Communities Organisation (TELCO) lauched their ‘Citizens Legacy’ at the St Francis of Assisi Church in Grove Crescent Road to lay the foundations of a relationship with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) who are in charge of the future of the Olympic Park site.

Around 70 community organisations - from schools, to churches, from mosques to local businesses - in Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney, Redbridge, and Waltham Forest attended the 16th TELCO Anniversary Assembly to discuss their successes over the past year getting jobs for young people at the London 2012 Games.

Speakers included Darren Gayle who overcame drug addiction to work at the Olympic Games, Summi Akhtar, a Carpenters Estate resident from the East London Mosque, and Paul Brickell, director of communities and regeneration at the LLDC.

A huge part of the annual meeting was devoted to securing fair jobs, housing, inspirational opportunities for east Londoners to make sure the Olympic legacy includes them.

Captain Nick Coke, one of the chairs of the meeting, said: “We still have a lot of work to do with this but now is the time to get stuck in.

“But as for us, we are committed the show goes on here on the streets of east London.”

The organisation have promoted for rights and housing for east Londoners in the past launching campaigns such as the Living Wage and CitySafe.
