Newham Council selected a preferred developer to re-build the Atherton Leisure Centre in Stratford on Thursday evening.

At a meeting of the cabinet at Newham Town Hall, Mayor Sir Robin Wales approved a partner to develop the Romford Road site into a modern, fit-for-purpose sporting facility for residents along with some additional development stated as ‘primarily housing’ in a council report.

Up to 14.7million has been identified in the council’s budget to develop the site. The names of interested parties were discussed in a closed meeting of the cabinet because the subject matter “contains confidential information relating to the overall price proposed by each of the tendering parties, which are commercially confidential, and their overall ranking following the tender process.”

The name of the contractor will be revealed after a ‘cooling period’ to take any objections and the Atherton Leisure Centre will close to the public in December to prepare for redevelopment.
