Voting to choose Labour’s next mayoral candidate in Newham will open on March 1.

Voting to choose Labour’s next mayoral candidate in Newham will open on March 1.

It was announced yesterday that following a re-run of December’s trigger ballot, the next mayoral candidate will be chosen via an open selection process, rather than an automatic renewal for incumbent mayor Sir Robin Wales.

To be eligible to vote, voters must have been Labour Party members for longer than six months, prior to January 2017, and not in arrears. The ballot will be online, open until 12pm on March 16.

Those wanting to stand must have been party members for at least 12 months, prior to January 2017.

In December’s ballot, Sir Robin won automatic renewal with 20 votes to 17 thanks to most affiliates backing him - but 11 out of 20 Labour electoral wards called for the involvement of other candidates. After legal action was launched, he called for the result to be scrapped.

A second ballot was run and voters opted for open selection.

The mayoral elections will take place on May 2.
