Newham Council have selected a construction firm to rebuild the Atherton Leisure Centre in Stratford.

Construction firm Mulalley, based in Woodford Green, has been confirmed as the preferred contractor after the council approved plans to demolish the sports centre due to high maintenance costs and levels of asbestos.

The Atherton closed for the final time on New Year’s Eve and a public consultation will be launched in the next few weeks with work expected to begin on the site in the summer.

Up to 14.7m has been identified in the council’s budget to spend on the new centre, which would include swimming facilities, a gym and space for fitness classes with views to open the new-look Atherton in 2015.

The Save the Atherton residents’ campaign has disputed the council’s claim that they will be saving more money by rebuilding the leisure centre rather than maintaining it.
