Newham’s councillors will join local trade unionists and others from across the UK for a demonstration against government spending cuts.

Labour representatives, along with members of the borough’s GMB, Unite and Unison branches, will take part in the TUC’s March for the Alternative in central London on March 26.

They will set off from East Ham and Stratford stations to join the protest, which will begin at Embankment at 11am and finish in Hyde Park.

The event will be a stark contrast to last month’s Newham Council budget meeting, when councillors faced the ire of some trade unionists angry about the 75 million of cuts due to be implemented at the authority over the next four years.

Labour councillor and cabinet member Cllr Unmesh Desai is co-ordinating the local delegation to the TUC march.

He said: “It is really important to show this Tory-led government how much anger there is about what the cuts are doing to people and communities in Newham and across the country.”
