A boost to road users has been promised after a multimillion-pound pledge on transport was announced.

Newham will receive £5.5million of the £148m budget for the capital’s 2016/17 transport improvement projects – more than any other East London borough.

The funds, supplied by the Mayor and Transport for London, will go towards various projects in the borough – including £100,000 towards reducing congestion by improving traffic flows around the Drill roundabout junction.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson hailed the decision, claiming it will “spur jobs and growth across London.”

“This latest round of funding will help to transform scores of locations in all four corners of our great city,” he said. “It is specifically targeted to help make our roads, town centres and open spaces more attractive places, with better facilities for walking and safer cycling.”

Last year the borough benefited from similar funding when £1m was spent on the design to convert Stratford Gyratory to two-way operation in a bid to reduce traffic and improve conditions for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport users.

London’s transport commissioner, Mike Brown, said: “People in East London will see real improvements to their local areas as a result of this funding.

“Working with East London boroughs, hundreds of transport projects will be delivered that will benefit pedestrians and road users through safer streets and improved public squares and shopping areas.

“These improvements will help transform communities and boost the local economy.”

Of all East London’s boroughs, Barking and Dagenham will receive the lowest amount of cash.

Hackney, meanwhile, will receive the second-highest amount behind Newham.

Havering will receive £3.3m, Redbridge £3.1m, Waltham Forest £3.2m and Tower Hamlets £2.8m.

TfL said it is working to minimise disruption during the works.
