Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade feels the O’s have got to be more ruthless in the final third if they are to start winning games.

The Brisbane Road side have been made to pay for individual errors at the back so far this term, but despite that have still have one of the better defensive records in League One.

But it’s up the other end of the pitch which the main concern is, having scored just six, with three of them coming in the victory at Oldham Athletic earlier in the season.

And while Slade believes his side are creating chances, he knows they have to be more clinical in front of goal, starting at Scunthorpe United tomorrow.

“There’s been a bit of inconsistency there is no doubt about that and we have made a few mistakes however if you look at the goals we have conceded it is the fourth best in the league,” said Slade.

“Our bigger problem is that we have not scored enough goals and I think in terms of scoring we lie 22nd in the league so that shows you where our strengths and weaknesses are and where we can do better.

“We can do better everywhere but we certainly need to be working the opponents keeper a little bit more and when we have the pressure in games, we need to be scoring.”

O’s away record is impressive as they remain undefeated going into the match against the Glanford Park side tomorrow.

However, Slade knows fortunes have to improve at home, where they have yet to pick up a win.

“As good as our away record is where we haven’t lost a game, and that includes going to Premier League Aston Villa, at home we have got to be better with teams getting behind the ball and making life difficult for us to,” he added.

“We need to find the key to unlock the door on occasions but it’s not like we aren’t creating opportunities.

“It’s the fact that we aren’t taking them. We are smelling blood but we aren’t being ruthless enough.”

Due to the heavy fixture schedule so far this term, and with just three home games to date, Slade has had to reshuffle the pack on a number of occasions.

That may have played a part in their indifferent start, but now the O’s boss feels they have to start working on partnerships all across the pitch in their bid to rise up the League One table.

“In any successful campaign you need a group to take you forward and having said that we need to nail down partnerships a little bit on the pitch whether it is at the back, in midfield or up front,” he remarked.

“We need to start nailing that down a little bit more to try and maybe get a little bit more fluency.”
