Veronica Oakeshott has been elected to represent Boleyn Ward following Thursday’s by-election.
The Labour candidate won 72 per cent of the vote, which had a 20.88pc turn out.
Liberal Democrat candidate Sheree Miller came second and Conservative candidate Emmanuel Finndoro-Obasi third, with just 10 votes separating the two.
The Green Party’s Frankie-Rose Taylor was fourth, Ukip’s David Mears fifth and independent candidate Diane Ofori sixth.
After her win, Cllr Oakeshott said: “Thank you to the residents of Boleyn for electing me as their new councillor.
“ I will endeavour to serve the community well and look forward to working with the Mayor and my fellow councillors during my term in office.”
The by-election was called following the death of Labour councillor Charity Fiberesima in October.
Returning officer Kim Bromley-Derry added: “It is with sadness that we have had to hold this election today, but I would like to thank all the candidates and staff who participated in this by-election.”
