Three people in Newham have been awarded in the New Year’s honours.

Karren Brady, West Ham Football Club vice chairman, was made a CBE for services to entrepreneurship and women in business.

While Shahed Ahmed, headteacher at Elmhurst Primary School, Newham, was made an OBE for services to education.

John Wild, cleansing manager at London Borough of Newham, picked up British Empire Medal for services to residents and the environment in Newham.

At Elmhurst Primary, Shahed has revolutionised the school which was judged as outstanding by inspectors Ofsted.

Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “It is great to see that Shahed’s outstanding work at Elmhurst School is being recognised. This honour is richly deserved.”

John, 50, joined Newham Council in 1982 as a labourer in the cleansing team and has worked his way up to become cleansing manager.

The award comes in the wake of John’s successful contribution to the 2012 Games, keeping the streets clean which ensured people who came to the borough were left with a good impression.

He said: “I am very proud to receive this honour and I dedicate it to my family for their continued support. However this award is as much for all the front-line cleansing staff in Newham as it is for me. They work hard every day and that makes my job so much easier so I thank them too.”

Mayor Wales added: “During his 31 years at the council John has made the cleanliness of the borough his priority. Cleaning the streets can often seem a thankless task but John has carried out his duties with enthusiasm and passion.

“John has been pivotal in ensuring the levels of cleanliness on our streets are among the highest in London and I am delighted his tremendous work over many years has been acknowledged in such a public way.”
