A security guard who kept his pregnant partner a prisoner in her own home before strangling her to death has today been sentenced to 17 years in jail.
Mohammed Badiuzzaman, 35, of no fixed abode, murdered mother-of-three Sabeen Thandi, 37, of Disraeli Road, Forest Gate, “in a fit of rage” after learning she had begun a relationship with another man, police said.
During the trial at the Old Bailey, jurors heard how three months before Sabeen’s death on July 7, Badiuzzaman had pressured her into marrying him.
His reign of terror also saw her forced to wear a hijab and unable to leave house, even to go to her work as a doctor’s receptionist.
About a month before her death, Sabeen had visited a solicitors in Watford and days later won a non-molestation order from Watford County Court against Badiuzzaman, preventing him from entering her home.
But Badiuzzaman forced her to revoke the order, threatening her with never seeing her son again.
When it became clear she had been coerced, the solicitors’ called police who arrested but later released Badiuzzaman on suspicion of threats to kill and unlawful imprisonment.
An abandoned phone call from her home led them to the discovery of her lifeless body in a bedroom but only after Badiuzzaman had lied to officers, telling them she had not returned from work.
Despite attempts to revive her, Sabeen was confirmed dead at Newham University Hospital.
Det Insp Euan McKeeve said: “This tragedy has left three children without a loving mother in the prime of her life.”
