Newham has seen a 63 per cent increase in the number of Islamophobic offences, according to figures revealed today.

Altogether, 31 Islamophobic incidents were reported in the borough between July 2014 and 2015, compared to 19 offences the year before.

Overall, London has seen a 70.7 per cent increase in the number of hate-related crimes against Muslims as 816 offences were reported in the 12 months preceding July, compared to 478 incidents the year before.

According to the Met, a range of factors can explain the rise in Islamophobia, including a growing willingness of victims to report hate crime, an improved awareness of MPS staff in identifying these offences; and work with partners to support victims.

Commander Mak Chishty, MPS hate crime lead, said: “We will not tolerate hate crime and take positive action to investigate all allegations, support victims and arrest offenders.

“Victims of hate crime must be assured that they will be taken seriously by the police. We have more than 900 specialist officers across London working in our Community Safety Units who are dedicated to investigating hate crime.

“We are always seeking ways to increase reporting and work with a number of third party reporting sites, such as the CST, so that victims who feel unable to approach police direct can report crime to non-police organisations and individuals. Victims of hate crime can in addition now report online on the Met’s website.

“No one should suffer in silence, so please report hate crime to us as soon as possible so we can act.”

The number of racist and religious hate crimes across the borough increased by 28 per cent last year, from 347 reported incidents to 445.

In November 2012, 16-year-old Tasneem Kabir suffered broken teeth and a smashed lip after she was knocked to the floor by Michael Ayoade, 34, in High Street, Plaistow.

Ayoade was jailed for four years in 2013 for attacking the college student as well as another on another young woman.
