British Transport Police are appealing for information after thefts at a cash machine at Manor Park station.

They want the public to be vigilant and have released images of a man they want to speak to following recent thefts from the ATM.

Detective Constable Jon Howlett, the investigating officer, said: “There have been two reports of distraction thefts at a cash machine at Manor Park station in the past month.

“On October 20, the first victim, a 27-year-old man from East Ham, was at the machine when he was approached by a man behind him. The man told him that the machine wasn’t working and to press various buttons to retrieve the card, during which time the man is thought to have stolen the card and used it to withdraw cash later that day.

“A few days later, on October 24, the second victim was told to press certain buttons. When the victim checked the machine, he noticed his card was gone.”

Police have followed several lines of enquiry into the incidents, including reviewing CCTV footage and have since identified a man they want to speak to.

DC Howlett said: “The techniques used leave the victims feeling very confused and disorientated, giving the man time to take the victim’s card before they notice.

“I would urge anyone using cash machines at stations to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police immediately.

“If you have seen anything suspicious at the station, or think you know who the man pictured is, please get in contact with us.”
