Whiskles, a male black cat with a white collar and mittens, was being transported to the Celia Hammond Animal Trust, Barking Road, on Wednesday.

As the family got out of the car, the cat pushed the grill at the front of the carrier open and ran into the Trinity Gardens estate.

Since then the 80-year-old owner and his family have put up posters and searched the area daily.

His daughter explained that the cat had been taken in around four or five months ago as a stray.

She said: “We tried to find its owners but to no avail and the cat made itself at home with no intention to go.”

The family had taken it to the animal charity to be neutered and check for a microchip on the day it escaped.

Anyone who may have seen Whiskles is asked to contact the clinic on 020 7474 8811.
