A 90-year-old Jewish Austrian is set to recount his memories to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

Harry Bibring, who is originally from Vienna, will speak at the Old Town Hall, Stratford, tomorrow as part of the event, which is open to all.

He will share his story of being a 12-year-old boy during the Anschluss, when Hitler annexed Austria, and the wave of anti-Semitic attacks on Jewish businesses and synagogues.

Harry, who moved to Britain with his sister as part of the Kindertransport scheme to rescue Jewish children, said: “Modern society has appeared to have learned nothing from the Holocaust.

“People are still discriminated against because they live a different life or have a different skin colour.

“This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day message is Don’t Stand By. I have been saying that for years.

“Standing by is bad. That’s why I want to meet young people and to tell them my story.”

The event, which will take place between 9.30am and 12.30pm, will also feature performances by the Every Child a Musician orchestra and choir and readings by students.

A candle lighting ceremony will take place to remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust and other genocides.
