Medics have issued a number of tips to help revellers stay safe and drink sensibly this New Year’s Eve.

Over the festive period, health services are typically placed under considerable pressure. Treating patients for drinking too much or for alcohol related accidents can increase waiting times and make it harder for people really in need of emergency care to receive the treatment they need.

If you do decide to drink over the holiday period, make sure to do it sensibly and within the recommended limits. Men shouldn’t regularly drink more than three to four units a day while women shouldn’t regularly drink more than two to three units a day.

Dr Zuhair Zarifa, chair of NHS Newham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and a local GP, said: “This festive period, we want people to enjoy themselves without putting their health at risk.

“Part of this includes knowing when to use A&E and when you could receive quicker or more effective treatment through self-care or visiting your pharmacist. Using A&E unnecessarily over the festive period can prevent other patients with more serious problems for getting the fast treatment they need.

“We know that adding up units can seem tricky, but keeping track of what you’re consuming can help you to know and understand your limits. Nobody wants their New Year’s Eve celebrations ruined by a trip to the hospital, so make sure you drink responsibly and stay safe.”

If you have over-indulged and you feel ill, choose the best treatment for you. If you can treat yourself at home with rest, painkillers and drinking plenty of water, this is likely to help you recover and feel better much quicker than a trip to A&E.

If you are unwell outside of your GPs normal opening hours, call the Newham out of hours GP cooperative service on 020 7511 8880 and they will direct you to the best service for your condition.
