The new entrance to the Emergency Department at Newham University Hospital is open today.

The entrance, which opens today at midday, will give people visiting casualty, the Urgent Care Centre and the Out of Hours General Practitioners a single and easy access to treatment while redevelopment work continues on the Emergency Department within the main building.

Its opening marks the completion of the preparatory works. This allows the Emergency Department, Urgent Care Centre and Out of Hours GP Services to move into the interim facility while redevelopment work on a new emergency department takes place.

The redevelopment brings a much needed expanded facility to the residents of Newham. The current Emergency Department was constructed in 1983 and was designed for 40,000 annual attendances but managed 112,785 in 2010/11.

In September 2011, the Trust secured funding to redevelop and refurbish the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre in time to meet the surge in demand anticipated during the London Olympics and to provide a lasting legacy for the residents of Newham.
