More than 1,400 cleaners working at the Olympic Games are set to stay in purpose-built accommodation a stone’s throw from the site.

Proposals for 139 individual cabins, a restaurant, and a shower for staff to be based at Sugar House Lane, have been submitted to Newham Council.

The existing building on site would be retained for office use.

Applicants Cleanevents intend to take them down by the end of November.

A total of 1,412 staff will be able to stay on the site during the Games, provided the application is successful.

In a statement submitted to Newham Council, the firm said 15 per cent of its workers would be recruited from the six host boroughs.

“There is a need to provide temporary accommodation for staff to service the 2012 Games, enabling the attraction and retention of staff for such events,” the application outlined.

“All of the structures to be provided on site will be temporary in nature and will be removed after the 2012 Games.

“The location of the compound has been chosen specifically to ensure that it is close to the main Games facilities to ensure easy access for the staff and a simplistic operational approach.”

Cleanevents has been involved in providing cleaners at Olympics since the Atlanta Games in 1996, including the Winter Olympics in 2002 and 2010.

A decision on the application will be made by the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation.
