Darryl Powis, 25, has left teaching in his home and community centres behind to open up his own academy, Guitar Tuition East London, in the former Olympic Village.

The owner, who lives in Chandos Road, Stratford, has been teaching for more than five years, but has finally decided to take the leap and make a career of it.

“I absolutely love helping people to become good musicians,” he explained.

“I believe this is the first guitar specific academy in London, so I’m really excited and its something I want to do for a long time.”

The school will be hosting a launch party, including music, cakes and drinks to celebrate their opening.

“The launch will be a chance to just hang out with everyone,” he said.

The academy is already planning big things like expanding elsewhere.

“In the future, we would very much like too, but our first priority is the quality,” he added. “I want to make this place the best it can be, then once I feel that is the case we will start looking to expand.

The school is open most days 10am to 9pm - appointments recommended.
