The road was shut between the junctions of Shaftesbury Road and Boleyn Road yesterday afternoon after being deemed unsafe.

A council spokesman said the cause of the collapse has not been determined, and that while no date has yet been fixed for it to reopen, drivers could face problems until Sunday.

Buses have been diverted along Upton Lane and Plashet Road, with other vehicles following a signposted route.
