Good Neighbours wanted for Canning Town, Custom House, Green Street and Upton Park

PUBLISHED: 11:55 05 March 2012

Organisations and volunteers keen to become good neighbours to residents in their area are invited to meetings tomorrow (March 1).

Newham New Deal Partnership (Newham NDP) is setting up a Good Neighbours Scheme in the Canning Town, Custom House, Green Street and Upton Park areas.

It wants to work with local organisations to set up the scheme to provide practical, neighbourly help to residents who may be elderly or disabled and may be having problems with day to day tasks or perhaps just need someone to talk to. The aim is to allow people to stay independent in their own homes and prevent isolation.

The Good Neighbours scheme hopes to provide opportunities for isolated people to meet others. It also aims to provide volunteering opportunities for local people to benefit the volunteers as much as the older people they work to support.

The scheme is looking for volunteers to become Good Neighbours as well as those who need help.

The meetings will be held at The Hub, 123 Star Lane, Canning Town, from 11am until 12 noon, and from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Thursday March 1.

There will be a separate meeting for local organisations also on March 1 from 1.30pm to 3.30.

A sandwich lunch will be served. Anyone interested in attending can contact the NDP on (020) 7474 6376 or goodneighbours@newhamndp.co.uk.
