A German teacher from St Bonaventure’s School has been presented with an award in recognition of her outstanding work.

Susan Prichard, who has taught languages at the Forest Gate school ever since she began teaching 25 years ago, received a German Teacher Award at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

She was said it was a “complete surprise” to be chosen as one of this year’s three winners and to be presented with a certificate and a £750 prize by the German Ambassador Dr Peter Ammon and the Rt Hon Baroness Coussins of Whitehall Park.

Susan was inspired to teach German after enjoying her lessons at school and hopes to inspire her pupils in the same way - but is also keen just to introduce them to a different culture.

“When they arrive in year seven they don’t know anything about Germany or the German culture, all they know is about the stereotypes,” she said. “The fact that they learn a few words and about the culture is just as important as anything else.”
