England Soccer legend Sir Geoff Hurst arrived by train on time at West Ham station to help rail staff celebrate their own ‘hat trick’.
Hurst got off the train from Fenchurch Street to be met at his old stomping ground by officials from C2C Rail which has been named this week as Britain’s most punctual train service for the third year running.
The train operators first topped the rail industry’s league table in December, 2011, at 97 per cent of trains on time — and have managed to keep the same score in the past 12 months, compared to national averages trailing at 90pc.
Even the monthly figures do them proud — they almost arrived at 98 per cent in the four weeks up to December 6, steaming ahead of the national figure of 86pc.
Geoff Hurst played 499 times for West Ham at Upton Park over 13 years, scoring 248 goals, as well as spells at Stoke City and as manager of Chelsea.
He won 49 caps for England and scored 24 goals, including his famous three-goal hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final when England beat West Germany.
