Speaking after the result was announced, Stephen Timms praised his fellow candidates for “for the decency and dignity in which this campaign has been fought.”

He thanked his team, his wife and Labour party members, as well as the voters of East Ham “who’ve entrusted me again for the sixth time after 21 years to be their representative in the House of Commons.”

He said: “That’s an enormous privilege that I’m extremely grateful for.”

Lyn Brown said she believed it had been “a good campaign, a campaign that has been fought on principals and policies and not personalities” before wishing her fellow candidates “all the best in the future.”

She added that she was “so very grateful” to her campaign team and that it was “a real, real, tremendous honour to be once again elected to be the MP for West Ham.”

Charlene McLean, who was elected as Stratford and New Town councillor during a by-election, dedicated her win to her “beautiful daughter.”

She said: “I didn’t think I’d be standing here a year after I was elected but there you go,” and thanked the residents of Stratford for voting for her.
