THIS is the first image of Custom House Crossrail station on the proposed 16bn transport link from East to West London.

The design of the station, planned for the junction of Victoria Dock Road and Freemasons Road, was revealed by London Mayor Boris Johnson at the launch of a Crossrail exhibition at The Building Centre in Bloomsbury.

The eight Crossrail stations on show at the display, which runs until December 8, were described by the Mayor as a “solid backbone of quality infrastructure and style”.

Custom House will be the only new Crossrail stop with above-ground platforms.

It will serve passengers from nearby London City Airport, visitors to the ExCeL conference centre in the Royal Docks, and will be an interchange for travellers using Crossrail, the Docklands Light Railway and buses.

Crossrail’s central section is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018. An estimated 200 million people are expected to use the service each year.
