A former footballer-turned-pundit turning up at a school might be unbelievable to many – but not to pupils at Sandringham Primary School.

Chris Kamara put on his coaching cap to help launch Premier Sport’s Inspire to Engage initiative, designed to get more children active during the summer holidays.

The former Leeds, Portsmouth and Sheffield United midfielder even had time to pose for pictures in addition to answering questions and coaching a football session all morning.

Chris said: “It’s unbelievable. The thing that surprised me straight away was when I came into the school, I came at play time and there were footballs going round everywhere.

“Going into different schools and seeing the kids at play time and not seeing them playing football, it’s soul destroying.

“They said to me as we walked across the playground here, ‘you might get hit by a football’ and I sort of thought ‘we’ll see’, but it was true.”

The former Bradford City and Stoke boss was full of praise for the Sandringham Road, Manor Park, school.

“This is an amazing school,” he said.

“We had an assembly before the session and the kids were very clever and tentative for such a young age, the questions were good and they laughed in all the right places and sympathised in all the right places.

“It’s a far cry from coaching adults because when you’re in professional sport, you have got to make sure you have the right sessions for professional footballers, whereas working with kids they’re quite happy to do everything you ask them to do and try to improve.”

The Inspire to Engage project, supported by Chewits, will see 10,000 children offered a free sports session in a bid to improve health and fitness.

“When I was growing up it was all about just going out and playing,” Chris said.

“Now there are so many distractions for kids, it’s just amazing.

“You want to get them off the computers, off their mobiles, off their iPads and laptops and get them out exercising.”
