A path in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is being renamed after former culture secretary Dame Tessa Jowell.
Dame Tessa, who died in May after a year-long battle with brain cancer, played a huge part in securing the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
The path runs from the ArcelorMittal Orbit, along the river down to Carpenters Lock in the middle of the park. It was used during the games as the main walkway.
David Mills, Dame Tessa’s husband, said: “Tessa was incredibly proud of the success of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and our family are thrilled at this wonderful honour made in her memory.”
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan added: “Tessa was one of the most respected politicians in the country, someone full of kindness and generosity.
“Tessa did more than anybody to bring the games to London and their spectacular success was a testament to her expertise, passion and energy.”
The announcement was made at a memorial service yesterday. The official name for the walkway will be announced next year.
