A multi-million pound contract that will see Forest Gate station expanded to cope with new Crossrail trains has been signed.

Network Rail has selected Atkins to design the bulk of works planned on the line between Stratford and Shenfield.

The contract includes the design of platform extensions at Forest Gate, along with seven other stations.

The work will allow Crossrail’s new ten-car trains to call at the stations when the service begins in 2018.

Mark Cowlard, Atkin’s managing director of rail solutions, said: “The design work we will undertake will be incredibly varied, from the extension of platforms, to the design of new footbridges, to remodelling overhead lines to incorporate the new metro-style services. “

Stations at Manor Park and Maryland will be on the 43-mile route, but will not get platform extensions.

Trains will instead use selective door opening.

Stratford station will also be revamped, with the current DLR platforms moving elsewhere on the site.
