Could you possibly stay quiet for five days? St Bonaventure's headboy did exactly that to raise money for charity.
Jamie Halliwell, who attends the school in Boleyn Road, Forest Gate, took part in a sponsored silence that raised £126 for Aid to the Church in Need.
The 16-year-old said it got easier after the first day as he could still communicate occasionally by writing things down and using a computer voice generator to deliver important message’s to teachers or his parents.
“I’m sure there are easier ways to raise money, staying quiet for five whole days was quite a challenge and I found it quite difficult,” he explained.
“In the past, I have tried giving up lots of things during Lent, some more successful than others, so I thought staying quiet would be something different.
“I got through it thinking each day was bringing me closer to the end and I was raising money for the charity.
“It was a time of reflection and I felt calmer by the end of the week.”
