A Forest Gate school hosted a St George’s Day event last week to tie in with lessons it has been delivering about British values.

St James’s Church of England Junior School in Tower Hamlets Road organised an afternoon tea for around 50 people, including staff, pupils, parents, school governors and members of the community on Thursday of last week.

The school choir performed and pupils read out poems that they had written in class which were based on the themes of St George and British values.

School governor Olusegun oyenigba said: “Year four has been learning about British values which include the importance of being tolerant, respectful and inclusive.

“The school is 98 per cent diverse and the children are of a mix of different faiths so it’s nice for them to understand what British values are.

“It was a really good event and the children enjoyed it.”

Head teacher Shirleyann Jones said: “It was a really enjoyable afternoon and the children did the school proud.”
