A married couple are retiring after 32 years of running their newsagents shop.

Aswin Patel, 64, and his wife Annapurnaben, 60, have decided to sell Upton News in Forest Gate to spend more time with their family.

Both were born in Kenya but did not meet until they moved to India. They came to England 40 years ago and have two children.

During that time, they have seen a significant change in the customers that use their shop.

Mr Patel said: “When I started there was a lot of English people and the news trade was booming.

“Now youngsters don’t seem to really read newspapers; it’s older people that come in.”

As well as running the shop, Mrs Patel was the branch secretary of the National Federation of Retail Newsagents’ East London branch.

She also took an active role in supporting the social committee and fundraising activities.

Mr Patel said the couple are planning to spend time visiting relatives in India before returning to live close to their son and daughter in Woodford Green.
