The cause of a fire which started in Forest Gate in the early hours of this morning is under investigation.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers were called to the scene in Sherrard Road at 2.48am, where part of the ground floor, first floor and roof were alight.

Crews from East Ham, Plaistow, Stratford and Leytonstone fire stations spend just over an hour battling the flames.

Two men escaped from the house before firefighters arrived.
