A forum of more than seven religious communities in Forest Gate will hold a public event to explore the problems facing the elderly.

The Faithful Friends forum is planning the event for June 23 to be held at Green Street Mosque, and hope to look at ways different religious communities can offer help.

The Rev Dr Chigor Chike, of Emmanuel Church, Forest Gate, said: “We plan to get some elderly people from within our community, from different faiths, to describe what life is like for them.

“This came up because some of our members felt we don’t always treat elderly people well.

“What we’re hoping is to hear from them directly so we can learn what problems they face.”

The Rev also said he hoped to have some experts address their meeting.

He said: “In addition, we want to get someone who works with the elderly, such as Age UK, to give a talk about the kind of issues the elderly face in the community today, and what help we can offer.”

Faithful Friends was set up in 2007 and is led by faith leaders in Newham.

The group meets regularly to address issues that affect the lives of residents, with Methodists, Baptists, Catholics, Sikhs, Hindus and both Sunni and Shia Muslims all involved.

Rev Chike added: “What we expect is that the different faith groups will have different approaches and responses to the problems facing the elderly.

“For example, for Christians, we believe you should treat your mother and father with respect and honour, and your days will be long. “

The forum shares ideas to improve inter-religious understanding and inform the leaders’ work within communities

This year, the forum plans to look at the importance of family in modern society, working with young people, caring for the elderly and the effects of faith schools on society.

The organisers would welcome any help arranging speakers, whether elderly members of the community or experts who work with older people.
