Forest Gate residents are being encouraged to pack a picnic and head down to Forest Gate Community Garden on Sunday for The Big Lunch.
The al-fresco food fest is being hosted to officially open the Earlham Grove based community garden.
Work to transform the space into a wildlife garden will start on Saturday, June 13 following Forest Gate residents successfully securing a five year lease from Newham Council.
“We wanted to open the garden so people could see it at the beginning,” said Myanah Saunders, acting co-ordinator of the Forest Gate Community Garden Steering Group.
“It’s going to be wonderful and a place for people to relax and meet friends. There will be a pond and a children’s play area.
“We decided to open the garden and host The Big Lunch as it is a good opportunity for people to get together and to meet their neighbours.”
The Big Lunch is a national initiative which aims to get as many people as possible to have lunch with their neighbours on the first Sunday in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.
The Forest Gate Community Garden Big Lunch will take place from 11am until 3pm and people are encouraged to bring food to share, games and also plants and seeds as there will be a plant and seed swap.
More than 200 vounteers have been recruited to work on the garden and it will also play host to an event on September 5 to celebrate the borough’s 50th anniversary and the Women’s Institute will also hold their centenary celebrations at the site.
