Armed Forces Day flags were hoisted in Newham on Saturday to honour members of the armed services past and present.

Union flags with Armed Forces Day, Show Your Support on them, flew at Newham Town Hall in East Ham and the Old Town Hall in Stratford.

Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “People from all ages and backgrounds respect the work that our armed forces do for us. Armed Forces Day is an excellent opportunity to let the men and women in those services realise how much they are appreciated.

“We fly the flags to recognise their bravery past and present. They consistently rise to the challenge we ask of them no matter what difficulties they face. They defend our interests every day by promoting peace, delivering aid, providing security and fighting terrorism. They make many sacrifices to keep us safe and totally deserve our support.”

Last month Newham Council awarded Freedom of the Borough to G Company 7 RIFLES, based in Portway, Stratford, in recognition of their courageous service.
