“Our condolences go to his family and friends at this sad time.”

Mr York is survived by wife Hazel, three daughters and six grandchildren.

He was made a freeman of the City of London and awarded an OBE in his lifetime.

Council chairman Cllr Amarjit Singh said: “Fred was a very fair and sincere man and a good trade unionist.

“He was respected by those around him. During his mayoral year he represented Newham with great dignity.”

During his time as a councillor Mr York served on a number of committees and was also a school governor and a magistrate.

His funeral will take place at midday this Friday (December 27) at the City of London Crematorium, Aldersbrook Road, Manor Park.
