Denmark Arms pub’s new owners reveal pictures and plans for Grade II-listed boozer

These are the first pictures to emerge from the inside of the Denmark Arms pub after it was sold.

The Grade II-listed boozer in Barking Road, East Ham, was bought by trendy chain Antic Pubs after the former landlord Ron Bolwell shut up shop blaming West Ham United’s move to London Stadium for killing trade.

Pictures show the extent of building work as the new owners – who also run the Forest Tavern in Forest Gate – get ready to move in.

Antic London boss Anthony Thomas said: “I think the Denmark Arms is such a fantastic old boozer in the heart of east London.

“For years we have wanted to serve the people of East Ham so this is a very exciting project for us.

“It’s ideal for a new lease of life and we are delighted to have been given the opportunity to breathe fresh air into the old thing and continue the long tradition of providing a place of work and respite for the community,” he added.

Builders have been stripping back the decor of the pub – built in about 1890 – in a bid to return the building to how it could have looked when Queen Victoria was on the throne.

The pictures show original parquet flooring, fireplaces, glass tiles and wrought ironwork.

Antic has pledged the pub will carry on serving the community “much like the pubic houses of the past” with plans to source food locally.

On Antic’s plans, a spokeswoman said it would be open seven days a week, except Christmas Day.

“There’ll be ample room to visit with friends and family with community events taking place through the year including a quiz, DJs, accoustic bands and plenty more,” she said.

But the pub won’t serve food until next year, she added.

When it does start serving, gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options will be on the menu.

“The final goal is to create the welcoming and friendly atmosphere that fans of our pubs hold dear, alongside a fond familiarity for returning locals, striking a balance between old and new,” the spokeswoman said.
